McAuliffe is currently running for the Democratic nomination in Virginias gubernatorial race.
More Countries Join US, Israel Boycott of UN Racism Conference
A growing number of Western countries are joining the United States and Israel in boycotting the United Nations World Conference on Racism, which opened today in Geneva, Switzerland. Australia, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and New Zealand all announced they would boycott the conference soon after the US announced its formal decision not to attend Saturday. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the opening session he was profoundly disappointed at the boycotts. We go to Geneva to get the latest.
North Carolina Town Prints Own Currency to Support Local Business
We take a look at how one North Carolina town is trying to become more self-sufficient by moving toward being able to feed, fuel and finance itself. The town of Pittsboro houses the nations largest biodiesel cooperative, a food co-op, a farmers market and, most recently, its own currency, the Pittsboro Plenty. Pittsboro is one of a number of communities across the country printing their own money in an attempt to support local business.
Supreme Court Denies Appeal for Death Row Prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal
The Supreme Court has denied an appeal from the journalist and former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal. On Monday, the court rejected without comment Abu-Jamals bid to overturn his conviction for the 1981 killing of a white police officer following a controversial trial before a predominantly white jury. Abu-Jamal contends the case was marred with racial bias, including the deliberate exclusion of blacks from the jury. It shows you that precedent means nothing, that the law is politics by other means, Abu-Jamal said in response to the ruling. [includes rush transcript]
Canadian Judge Upholds Government Decision to Bar British MP George Galloway on National Security Grounds
A Canadian judge has upheld the Canadian governments decision last month to ban the outspoken British lawmaker George Galloway from entering the country for a speaking tour. Canadian officials say they banned Galloway on national security grounds, saying he provided financial support to Hamas, the Palestinian political party which was elected in January 2006 and controls the Gaza Strip.
